Donald J. Garcia
January 6, 1931 - April 21, 2020
Donald J. Garcia, passed away on April 21, 2020; he was born on January 6, 1931.
Donald Garcia, beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, left this world at the age of 89 after enjoying a long and full life.
The family choose to remember Don through the pastimes and people he loved.
We will think of him when we open a good book, hear the song “Stranger In The Night” (especially on the ski slopes!), cheering on the Giants, and share a good loaf of bread. He was always ready for a chat, a good laugh, or debate about politics, and he loved to listen to opera and classical music.
Donald will be remembered by his family as someone who was always ready to welcome guests, join loved ones at the beach, take friends for a boat ride, to water ski, go fishing or crabbing, and for mixing an excellent Clamato Bloody Mary. Don was a wonderful host, a fun-loving person, and a generous soul.
He loved horseback riding in the Pocantico Hills, hunting with his buddies in Pennsylvania, swimming in the ocean, driving his boat in the Barnegat Bay, and walking the boardwalk in Seaside Park, NJ. He was a longtime member of the Seaside Park Yacht Club where he was an active participant in the Folly performances and other events.
Don attended Roosevelt High School (Yonkers, NY) and the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA). He was a longtime resident of Ossining, NY, North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow), NY and Seaside Park, NJ.
As a businessman, he co-owned the Carole Ann Lingerie in Yauco, Puerto Rico for twenty-five years and also ran several plants employing up to 1,000 employees. In his later years, Don resided at Cedar Manor Nursing Home (Ossining, NY) where he served as President of the Resident Council.
Don is preceded in death by his loving wife: Maria Montavlo Garcia; parents Julio and Laura Garcia; brother Julio A. Garcia, Jr.; son Robert Salmon; and nephews Robert and Julio A. Garcia III.
He is survived and remembered with love by his daughters Patricia (Bob Zipkin) and Cynthia Garcia, son Dennis Salmon; grandchildren Cassady and Keila Zipkin, Lindsay and Valerie Salmon, Benjamin Ettlinger; daughter-in-law Jennifer Allen Salmon; sister-in-law Margaret Garcia; nieces Laura Garcia Ruffalo and Carole Garcia Chifalo; and many other friends, neighbors, and community members.
Burial services are private.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Uniceff Fund.
