Jeronimo Sousa Vazao
January 5, 1936 - September 6, 2019
Jeronimo Sousa Vazao, a resident of Ossining, NY, passed away on September 6, 2019. He had lymphoma.
He was born in Portugal on January 5, 1936 and was the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Sousa) Vazao.
He married Maria Alice do Rosario Pinto Morgado on December 30, 1967 at the Roman Catholic Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima, Portugal. When he passed, his wife was by his side, holding his hand.
Before his retirement, Jeronimo worked at the old General Motors plant in Sleepy Hollow, NY.
In Portugal, he worked as a mason for the family business. He even built his own home by hand.
Jeronimo came to America in May 1974, only a few days after a revolution broke out in Portugal. He proudly became a United States citizen on the 200th anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights.
Jeronimo enjoyed reading, inventing, and working with stones. He especially enjoyed growing good food, cooking it, and eating it with family and friends. He grew up on a farm, and never lost his love of the land. His specialty was figs, which require patience and zealousness, because fig trees are not zoned for this climate. After he retired, he discovered sightseeing. He visited his eldest daughter in Houston annually and took road trips with her across the state. His greatest wish was to visit Israel, and in 2013, he joined his wife and youngest daughter on a Holy Land pilgrimage sponsored by St. Augustine’s Church, which is located in Ossining. He then planted a fig tree from Jerusalem in his garden. He was a quietly devout man, who regularly attended mass, and proudly served as an usher.
He was a founding member of the Portuguese Club in Ossining, NY, and could frequently be found in the game room downstairs talking and buying drinks with his friends. He liked jokes, including practical jokes; he liked to see people laugh.
Jeronimo Vazao is survived by his wife Maria Alice; his daughters Ana and Aldina (Kennedy); his son-in-law David Kennedy; two grandchildren, Dylan and Jonah; his brother Jose; his sister Maria; his cousins Luis, Vincent and David Xavier; his niece and goddaughter Isabelina; and his nephews Pedro, Richard, and Christopher.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday 9/11 at 10 AM at St. Ann's Church in Ossining.
Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla.
The Wake is Tuesday 9/10 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Dorsey Funeral Home.
