Dr. Serban Fotino
1924 - March 30, 2017
Dr. Serban Fotino passed away on March 30, 2017 at age 92, suffering a heart attack on his way to work.
He was a Clinical Professor of Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Jacobi Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he had worked since completing his internal medicine and chief residencies there in 1969.
His love of medicine --"Being a doctor is in my soul"-- shone through in his founding of the Jacobi Homecare program and receipt of the Samuel Rosen Outstanding Teacher Award in 2002.
Born in 1924 in Bucharest, Romania to engineer and composer Scarlat Fotino and Marcella Teodorescu, he completed his studies at Bucharest's Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in 1954. It was there that he met his future wife and fellow doctor, Marilena Epure, to whom he would be married for over 70 years.
A talented violinist, he was one of the original members of Bucharest's "Doctors' Orchestra".
He is survived by his wife, Marilena Fotino, his brother and sister-in-law, Mircea and Ingrid Popa Fotino, and two nieces, Domnica and Adriana Fotino; and by the memory of his generosity, devotion, intellectual curiosity, and wonderfully dry and irreverent sense of humor.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 2, from 3pm-5pm at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 14 Emwilton Place, in Ossining.
Interment on Monday at 9:30 AM at Dale Cemetery.
