Awilda S. Quintero
March 2, 1931 - December 6, 2016
Awilda S. Quintero, 85, of Westchester, New York died after a brief illness on December 6, 2016.
She was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to New York City as a child. She grew to embrace all of the challenges, excitement and opportunities that life offered this blossoming New Yorker. As a young woman she especially enjoyed dancing in venues like The Stork Club, The Copacabana and other NYC iconic locations. She later attended CUNY-The City College of New York where she met her husband Reynold Quintero, an attorney. They were married for forty-seven years and raised three children: Cecilia, John and Alicia. (John died tragically in 1997 and Reynold died of multiple chronic conditions in 2004).
Awilda was particularly proud of her thirty-year corporate career at Mobil Corporation while raising her family; she was the Manager of the Corporate Secretary’s Department up until Mobil left Manhattan in 1990. The following years were spent enjoying her home in Flatbush, Brooklyn, volunteering for The Lighthouse, UNICEF and The Children’s Defense Fund. She loved traveling to Europe when the opportunity arose. She spoke three languages fluently and truly relished hearing she sounded like a native French speaker whenever visiting France or Canada.
In 2011, Awilda became a resident of The Danish Home in Croton, in the Hudson Valley area where she enjoyed the HYGGE (a Danish term for a state of mind which evokes a winter warmth/love feeling) from the staff in the beautiful historic forty-acre estate. She loved the people and the setting but still made no secret of the fact that by now she was definitely still a loyal Brooklynite at heart! She particularly enjoyed being closer to her grand-daughter Zoe, watching her grow up to eventually attend college and later move to Brooklyn. She was very proud that there was a new adventuresome traveler now representing the family in the county of Kings!
We hope and pray that Awilda is now enjoying the blessings of fine music in the company of her loved ones in heaven!
